Shannon- Claryfying Questions
Shannon- Clarifying Questions:
1) Why did Hamlet make Horatio and Marcellus swear twice?Having sworn
once, why were the two reluctant to swear again?
2) What does "cap-a-pe" mean? Act 1, Scene 1, Line 212
3) Why were the King and Queen so insistant that Hamlet not mourn his
father any longer? How could they so easily lose their own grief,
especially the Queen?
4) What is the custom of Denmark for which the country is often mocked?

#3. They insist that Hamlet forget his grief because it is getting in the way of their happy little marriage and rule. They have already moved on and cannot understand why Hamlet still dwells on his fathers death. For the King especially, this brroding on Hamlet's part is dangerous to his precariously earned position. The Queen forgets her grief in her distraction with her new marriage.
